Why are there red exclamation marks beside the layers in my maps table of contents?

If ArcMap cannot find the data file (e.g. shapefile, coverage, etc) that a layer is based on it displays a red exclamation mark to the left of the layer name in the table of contents. To correct this error: 1) Right-click the layer and click Properties. 2) Go the Source tab and click the Set Data Source button. 3) Navigate to the location of the source dataset and click Add. 4) Click OK on the layer’s Properties dialog. For more information refer to the ArcGIS Desktop help. (Go to ArcMap | Managing layers | Repairing broken data links).
