I spent about 2 years volunteering at a homeless shelter. The vast majority were homeless for one reason: addiction. Most of them had the same story. They were addicted to drugs or alchohal. Many of them had kids somewhere. They would spend their entire paycheck the day they got it. Eventually their habit made it impossible to keep a job. They received help from family, but eventually they took advantage of their family member’s generosity. They were cut off by that family member. Some family members thought that the other family members were cruel to kick them out. They received help from other family members, but eventually took advantage of them also. After awhile, they had nowhere else to turn. I’ve talked to several of their family members in an attempt to find them a home until they could get back on their feet.
