Why are there drugs to treat bacterial infections but very few to treat viral infections?

Because antibiotics are effective against bacteria and not against viruses. Viruses use our own cell pathways, so in a sense, to poison a virus you have to poison yourself. Tricky for drug design. Viruses can mutate (change) quickly….that’s why we get a new (and different) flu vacine each year.
