Why are there disadvantages to synthetic therapies?
A. Women have traditionally used synthetic therapies to protect against osteoporosis and heart disease. These synthetics are appealing to patients because they treat symptoms and offer protection against the above mentioned disease states. Yet they often have side effects — breast tenderness, breakthrough bleeding, and fluid retention — for those who use them. Traditional hormone replacement has relied on medications, which are partially from unnatural or lab prepared sources, that try to mimic the hormones that a women’s body naturally produces. The body recognizes some of these medications as being foreign, therefore causing unwanted side effects which could at times be dangerous.
