Good question. First there were SmartCards for Olympus and Compact Flash for all others. The because of limitations, Olympus dropped the SmartCards and invented the xD cards … the still have limitations (besides the fact the only Olympus and some Fujifilm camera can use them). CF cards continued to be viable. The Sony entered the P&S game and decided to use their own memory card … to date only Sony products can use Memory Sticks. As P&S cameras got smaller and smaller, it became obvious that a smaller, but equally as dependable memory card needed to be invented. Enter the SD and now SDHC card for use in all the P&S cameras but Sony and Olympus. Many entry level DSLR’s have started using SD cards instead of the more robust CF cards still used by all the professional DSLR’s and bridge to professional DSLR’s I looks as though the SD (and derivative SDHC) and CF cards will be around for a long time to come.
