Country information within JTIMS is derived from two separate sources, FIPS 10-4, Countries, Dependencies, Areas Of Special Sovereignty, And Their Principal Administrative Divisions, and ISO 3166-1, Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1: Country codes (ISO 3166-1:1997). There also been carefully selected additions made to the library of geopolitical and similar entities to the list; e.g., NATO. The list of countries and their two-character codes are derived from FIPS 10-4 while the three-character codes are derived from ISO3166-1.As with any two standards, there are areas where the two standards do not overlap.
