Why are there Chinese schools in the Philippines?
Actually, most Chinese schools in the Philippines started out as cooperatives among the Chinese immigrant families in the local community who wanted their children to retain their Chinese culture and heritage, so they usually donate money to set up a school and hire Chinese teachers to teach their kids the basics of Chinese classical education like Chinese literature, calligraphy, mathematics, music and arts. etc.as well as instill Confucian values among their children from Elementary to High School. These private schools also offer basic education required by the Dept. of Education along with the Chinese classes so their graduates are recognized and accredited by the DepEd. Over the years, Filipino parents have seen the advantage such an education gives their children in the local business community usually dominated by Chinese businesses, so they enrolled their children in these schools as well.
