Many of the costs entailed in journal publishing are directly affected by the number of pages published – e.g. copyediting, typesetting, online production and many online hosting costs. Hence longer papers have higher associated costs. It is envisaged that the advertised author charges coupled with institutional memberships will be sufficient to cover costs for the majority of papers, but for papers over nine pages long, excess page charges of $170 per page will be levied.
