The truth is, there DID used to be speed limit signs at the start of every motorway and on every access ramp. However, the signs showed the speed limits for cars/motorcycles, cars towing trailers, vans and H.G.V.s, as well as showing vehicles banned from driving on motorways. This was regarded as too much information to be read whilst driving at speed and the signs were all removed (about 20 years ago, as I recall). The current ‘speed limit’ signs can be viewed on the webpage below (scroll down to the section headed, “Speed limit signs on motorways”). It is now up to all drivers to know the speed limits on British roads, whether you are a resident or visitor.
