Why are the Water Management District and Cal-Am concerned about wildfires in the Carmel River watershed?
Burned areas erode more easily than vegetated areas. Thus, there is a concern that greater-than-normal quantities of sediment may be deposited in reservoirs during winter rains immediately following a fire, possibly affecting water supply the following summer. Increased siltation in the river may also deteriorate fish and wildlife habitat.
