Why are the US government websites so vulnerable?
You can protect your house and prevent intrusion and theft. But how do you protect your house from being made inaccessible by someone blocking all access to your street, yard, or sidewalk – leaving no path to get to your house. Your house is safe, but no one can use it – nothing can get in or go out. That is the kind of attack that hit the US websites. (Denial of Service Attack). By overwhelming the website with what look like legitimate queries but aren’t, legitimate queries cannot get through. It is nearly impossible to completely protect against such an attack – especially if it is mounted in a way that appears to be coming from all directions as this one was. It did not put any data or secrets in any danger – It just made the sites slow, unresponsive or unusable until the attack avenues were discovered and shut off.
