Several species of plants have two-toned leaves, with the undersides often displaying silver-grey hairs that help reduce evaporation of precious water. The hairs also act as a deterrent to chewing or sucking insects as well as chewing mammals. The lighter color of their undersides helps reflect sunlight–an important consideration for plants native to mountainous areas closer to the sun, or in deserts where intense sunlight can burn foliage.
