Why are the traffic jams so bad in Thailand?

Bangkok and other cities in Thailand suffer from traffic jams and so do main roads when the police decide to do spot checks, which is quite often. Bangkok is of course the worst and it is common to sit stationary for hours not minutes. Locals accept this with no objection and rarely does a horn sound as they almost sleep in their vehicle. Never will you see a remonstration or reaction from a bored drivers, they just accept it. This is very polite but unfortunately, it makes the traffic problems worse for two reasons. Firstly the slumbering driver in front of you and the one on front of him will lethargically edge forward on a green light so you will not make it through the lights and hence the traffic is back-up all over the place. Secondly, when another vehicle just decides to stop in the middle of the road blocking everyone’s progress, the other traffic just accepts it and so all the traffic is held up by one selfish individual – elsewhere they would move on because a tirade of horns
