Why are the road signs so unclear?

Anyone who lives here will tell you their opinion on the abysmal road signage. If it is your first time driving, you will be very shocked how bad it really is. Unlike other countries that give you due warning before a junction, Thailand likes to tell you at the exact point where you need to turn or even a little after. The signs themselves are very inconsistent and where there are signs in English they often make little sense and are littered with spelling mistakes. It seems there are no native English speakers in Thailand to ask before they commit to manufacture! Also, be aware that there seems to be a conspiracy to stop anyone getting anywhere without asking for help. Road maps are useless and so you are bound to try to make sense of the signs but instead of signs showing well known destinations like Pattaya, Hua Hin, Korat, Chiang Mai etc., you will have to choose between Din Daeng, Chang Wattana and Bang Na. All very confusing…
