Why are the multicast packet counters incrementing on a device connected to the ProCurve Switch 2224, even though there is no traffic going through the network?
The Switch 2224 transmits flow control by default. These packets do not impact performance because the packet rate is very low. The switch sends flow control packets at a rate of approximately one every 50 milliseconds. While these are multicast packets, they are sent from switch to switch only and not throughout the entire network. These flow control packets may cause the Switch 2224 Activity LED to flicker or remain on constantly and may also cause a device attached to the Switch 2224 to indicate activity (in terms of received packet statistics). Note that ProCurve switches provide an Activity LED persistence of 5 milliseconds per flash so that extremely low levels of traffic are easy to detect visually. As a result, the traffic level on a 100 Mbps link will appear (according to the Activity LED) to be higher than it really is.
