Why Are The Mexican People Protesting Tortillas?
In January 2007, the Mexican people marched and protested the raising price of tortilla in Mexico City. Corn tortillas in Mexico cost about 77 cents (or 9 Mexican pesos) per tortillas right now. The main reason why the Mexican people protested the increased price of the tortilla is because the tortilla is a major part of their daily meal. As the matter of fact, the tortilla provides basic nutrition for thousands of very poor people in Mexico. The raising price of tortilla is being blamed on the amount of imported corn dwindling. The United States is not exporting as much corn as it did in the past because much of the corn from the United States is being used to create ethanol production. This is thought to have been the highest raise in tortilla prices in the history of Mexico. The Mexican secretary of state will request more corn in an attempt to resolve this drastic situation.
