The mayors of Millstone and Rocky Hill are fighting mad — and fighting back. They are suing the state Department of Education after their towns’ school districts were dissolved. Rocky Hill Mayor Edward Zimmerman and Millstone Mayor Raymond Heck said the lawsuit is about representation and respect. On July 1, the small towns’ school districts — along with 11 others throughout the state — were eliminated. The so-called “non-operating school districts” pay to send their students to a neighboring district. As a result, Rocky Hill’s district was merged with Montgomery Township and Millstone with Hillsborough. Both mayors said they were not opposed to merging with another district, but felt the residents should have had a say. “The smaller towns are being dictated to instead of treated with respect, like people who live in the bigger towns, even though we pay the same taxes,” Zimmerman said.
