Why are the image files not larger?

All the digitised files in the American Civil War Photographs Collection have been downloaded at the maximum JPEG file size available. It is possible to download a TIFF file of many of the images which result in better quality images. Unfortunately these files are significantly larger at about 2MB per image on average. Each file is therefore 10 times larger then each JPEG file and the whole Collection would total over 3.5GB. While the higher quality is desirable it is not practical. The smaller JPEG files are more convenient to use and simpler for teachers and students alike.
