Why are the dresses for a catholic communion so long some times?

Communion is a solemn act, and a more formal-style (long) dress is considered appropriate for an occasion like that. Besides, long dresses just look terrific in church!

The reception of First Holy Communion is a big deal. It is right and proper that the children receiving their first Holy Communion be dressed in ‘formal attire’. The boys are often dressed in all-white suits while the girls are often dressed in long all-white dresses. It IS a style thing, as suits and long dresses is what constitutes formal attire in Western society – but the color white is also important as it represents purity. We’re supposed to be pure when receiving a Holy Sacrament. (I guess the exception is Reconciliation as one receives that Sacrament to become pure.
