The foundations of effective transferability, and bilingualism, should begin from the beginning of instruction, even before specific elements of English, or transferability, are directly instructed. In the first instructional moments in all models of bilingual education, educators need to help their students develop “an ear and an eye” for English. There is current reliable research that clearly demonstrates the positive and lasting impact of early phonological awareness instruction in BOTH English and Spanish for Spanish speaking English Learners.
