Why are the Battles of Somme, Marne and Verdun important?
The First Battle of the Marne (also known as the Miracle of the Marne) was a World War I battle fought from 5 September to 12 September 1914. It resulted in a Franco-British victory against the German Army. The Second Battle of the Marne, or Battle of Reims (July 15 to August 5, 1918) was the last major German offensive on the Western Front. It failed when an Allied counterattack led by French forces overwhelmed the Germans, inflicting severe casualties. The other two were horrific losses on both side.
