Why are the action buttons (slideshow, share, order prints, copy to album, delete) grayed out?

To perform some of the actions, you must first select at least one picture. To select a picture, hold your mouse over a picture. You will see a box and the word Select in the bottom left corner of the picture. Click on that box, and the Action buttons become available.
