Why are terraced houses less popular?
Perhaps it depends on what type of terraced house and where it is. I live in London where terraced houses are quite usual. It is in a long street of Victorian terraces and I have a back garden (small, but not tiny) which backs on to the neighbours. It feels very safe as I have houses either side and behind. It is very quiet so perhaps I am lucky. In other parts of the country terraced houses sometimes have no garden or just a tiny backyard. I have relatives who live in a terrace in one of the communities on the outskirts of Plymouth. THe houses were built in the 60s or 70s have paper thin walls and you can hear everything. I much prefer mine.
Mostly i think it is a matter of perception. We all basically want to be the king of our own castle. With a semi or a detached our own little castle has some semblance of an estate to go with it by way of the land you also own on 3 sides. My wife has been moaning at me for years about having a house on a large plot when neither of us have the slightest interest in gardening, she see’s it as an encumbrance due to all the grass to be cut, i see it as my own little bit of England. Many older terraced houses’ were built by business owners and rented to their workers so they still carry a memory of being bottom of the range housing. Of course builders are aware of this and when they build them now they are called Town Houses’ which sounds more up market. Our very first house was a brand new mid terrace (they hadn’t started playing about with the name then) and i have to say that i do not have too many fond memories of it, though you did tend to get to know your neighbours more – though that
