In a historically common phenomenon, a newly-strong country (China) demanding more influence over its external environment is clashing with a long-dominant country (the USA) over a collection of specific disputes.  These disputes include whether Japan should be militarily strong, whether China has the right to rule Taiwan, and whether China owns the South China Sea.  The USA and China each take positions on these disputes that support their own interests.  Expect these tensions to persist and probably increase as China’s level of strength relative to the United States grows,
