Why are Southwest boarding passes available only at the Departure Gate 20 minutes prior to scheduled departure?
In order to provide an orderly boarding process and to accommodate as many Customers as possible, issuance of all boarding passes will be restricted to the Departure Gate only, within 20 minutes of scheduled departure. Customers are welcome to check luggage, but they need to proceed to the gate for a boarding pass. It can take as long as 20 minutes to transport luggage to the staging area and direct it to the right airplane, so we cannot guarantee that your luggage will make it on your particular flight, if checked so close to departure. If all the boarding passes have been issued prior to the 20-minute cutoff at the Ticket Counter or Skycap counter, Customers will be advised to proceed to the Departure Gate for checkin and possible accommodation on other Southwest Airlines flights. Southwest’s “10-Minute Rule” is still in effect and has not changed with the new Automated Boarding Pass procedures. Customers must still claim their reservation by checking in for their flight 10 minutes p
