Why are some words spelled misspelt or spelt phonetically in scrolling captions?
Phonetic spelling is occasionally used during scrolling stenocaptioning. Stenocaptioners use a shorthand machine (a syllabic keyboard) that interfaces to a computer-based dictionary. Each key combination (there are about 23 keys on a shorthand machine) has been memorised by the captioner and is linked to a specific word in their personalised dictionary.
