Why are some rayon garments labeled “washable” and some labeled “dry clean only”?

Originally rayon was a “dry clean only” fiber. However, washability in rayon can be achieved by putting certain finishes on the surface of the fabric after it was knitted or woven. But since this also adds to the price, much rayon in the marketplace remains untreated, and is therefore “dry clean only”. It’s very important to read the labels, and be aware that just because you may have purchased a washable rayon last week, that doesn’t mean that all rayon are washable.
