Why are some products labelled “PHENYLKETONURICS: Contains phenylalanine”?
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is rare inherited genetic disorder. Phenylketonurics cannot metabolise phenylalanine (a component of Aspartame) from any source and need to follow a very strict diet to avoid this amino acid. The disorder affects approximately one in 10,000 people. In many countries, screening programmes which include tests for PKU have been in place for all new born babies for over 35 years. For the rest of the population, Phenylalanine and Aspartame are safe. Click here to find out more about Aspartame safety.
