Why are some other products filmcoated while the TEVA product is not?
Some products have a HPMC (hydroxypropylmethylcellulose) and PEG (propylethyleneglycol) coating. Such a coating has no effect on the bioavailability of the product. This means that the pharmacokinetics (rate and amount of absorption, distribution throughout the body, elimination) of both coated and plain tablets are comparable, which results in a comparable effect. This was also shown in a bioavailability study. Advantages of coated tablets are the protection against light, and possibly against damages and moist. But when the plain tablets are stored and used in the right manner, no problems exist. An advantage of non-coated tablets over film-coated tablets is the possibility to break the tablets if half doses are needed.
