Why Are Some Layer Names Grayed-Out In The Map Layers Tab?
Some map layers are automatically turned on and off by the software because their features are not visible at certain scales. For example, buildings are often turned off at 20000 scale because when the user zooms out beyond this scale the buildings appear only as dots on the screen. Utility systems are often turned off at 5000 scale for the same reason. Names of layers that are not visible at the current scale of the map are grayed-out in the Map Layers Tab. As the user continues to zoom in, the layer names will change from grayed-out to black letters as they become visible. The user still controls whether or not layers appear on their map with the check box control.
