Why are some Irish councils spending up to €500,000 per Traveller family?
My guess is that the Irish political elite see it as part of their ‘duty of care’ and will not allow Travellers to miss out on whatever can be done to help them ‘settle’ as far as is possible. By building sites for Travellers, this encourages them to stay in proper sites and not at some roadside making a mess of the place before moving on. I wonder if anyone has done any research into the origins of the Irish Travellers. I have seen these travelling folk here in UK and nearly always, they have the appearance of Celts. I’m a Celtic person myself (Welsh) and know my own folk when I see them. It must be the green or blue eyes, the blond or red hair (quite often) and that sense of freedom which radiates around these people. My own pet theory as to the origins of the Irish Travellers, is that they might possibly be descended from folk who simply took to the road during the time of the Great Irish Famine – an issue personal of survival.
