Why are some images poor quality, and others clear?
Image quality is determined by a number of factors; the quality of the hardcopy at the time of filming, the quality of the microfilming, and the image balancing that is done at the time of digitisation. As a result, there can be a large variance in the quality of images you see in the delivery systems. As the Newspaper Digitisation Program takes a mass digitisation approach to delivery, individual images are not individually corrected or enhanced. If you find an image and you’d like a better quality copy, you may wish to consider asking your local library if they hold a copy (hardcopy or microfilm), or if they are able to request a copy from a different library that holds the newspaper.
