Why are some advocates for children supporting reauthorization of pediatric exclusivity?
Simply put, some advocates are doing it out of desperation because they want pediatric tests conducted and they don t see any alternative to giving the industry billions in incentives. Consider the Senate testimony of Paul Glaser, chairman of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Glaser said this about windfall profits created by the pediatric incentive: “[A]s I see it, that is all part and parcel of buying into our system that stresses money and power and where there is very little room for mandating a moral imperative. ” Public Citizen believes that consumers should not have to offer a golden carrot to get the most profitable industry in the country to do what it should be required to do: test for the safety of drugs in children as it already does for adults.
