Why are so many Americans retiring in Central America and Mexico?
Today, you have such great airlift capacity: close proximity is No. 1; No. 2 is affordability. A lot of Americans are concerned about their retirement and Medicare and Social Security. Are they going to be able to afford to stay in the United States? A lot of Americans haven’t saved a lot of money. If they have a limited amount of money or disposable income, where is it going to go the farthest? That’s why Panama is the No. 1 retirement destination in the world for Americans. Mexico is No. 4. The reason that those two countries today are at the forefront for retirees would be proximity, affordability, cost of living, infrastructure, health care … taxes are very low. And they can get back easily to the United States. One thing we’ve learned from 9/11 is I can walk back or I can drive back from any of these countries. I don’t have to get on an airplane.
