Making another language a “co-language” devalues the cultural significance of our own dialect and discourages cultural exchanges. Our language has grown from a purely British tongue to include various words and phrases that are borrowed from multiple languages and cultures. Take the phrase “okay”, one of the possible sources for the much loved term is from the Choctaw Indians. Our culture is open and allows for the wholesale assimilation of different cultures into the larger society. Forcing the culture of this nation to “adopt” a language for which the majority of it’s people do not use will alienate the Hispanic community even further.
