Why are signs posted in some parks that prohibit certain sports?
Parklands By-Law 161-83 stipulates that “No person shall conduct or participate in sports or other endeavors in areas that are designed specifically as…passive and sitting areas and facilities for young children.” This by-law also gives the Commissioner authority “to post signs and restrict or limit the use or attendance… of the parkland…that is deemed necessary for the interest of the public safety and welfare.” For these reasons, signs may be posted in certain parks to prohibit some sporting activities, particularly where the park is in close proximity to residential properties that could be accidentally damaged, or where the activity could take the quiet enjoyment of the property away from the owner.
