Since historical times rivers have provided water and food for human populations. As people became less nomadic and began farming the importance of an accessible and reliable water source became more important. Rivers also provided a strategic importance to protect early settlements and towns from invaders.The importance of rivers can be clearly seen by their proximity to the first great cities of this world. Early populations used rivers for food and agriculture but as trade evolved these waterways became early roads by which people and goods could be easily and economically transported over large distances.
