Why are religious people so against stem cell technology/embryo screening?

That is a very generic question. But I believe that is is not the stem cell research that is the problem. I think that most religious people are against the idea of cloning humans. I for one would love to be able to grow my own organs if I needed a new one.

I think its stupid, although atleast now people can get stem cells from the placenta of the baby which doesnt involve killing the baby. So that atleast solves the stem cell arguement for religious people. If I had a vagina, I’d get pregnant and get it aborted every four weeks and get paid money for the fetus so they can harvest the stem cells. It’s such a good idea.

It is an extension of their opposition to abortion. They don’t want to give in on even the smallest point, even is a situation like this where stem cell research may very well point the way to a host of cures for a variety of medical conditions. Their point is that stem cells come from embryos, which are destroyed in the process of harvesting the stem cells, and embryos are part of the building blocks to human life. They are opposed to this even in cases where the embryos’ owners have asked for them to be destroyed. It’s common for a woman to have embryos harvested for later use, pay for their storage, and ultimately decide that they are no longer needed. It seems insane to me to object to making use out of something that was going to be discarded.

I’m all for stem cell research so I don’t share that view, but I thought I could help a little since I had to write a 20 page paper on it a couple years back. Alot of the people against it are also against IVF unless all the eggs are used or donated to other couples. The extra fertilized eggs are just kept in storage and to donate them to research is to destroy them. It’s the same as being pro-life. They think those little eggs are considered people once they are fertilized and it’s murder to get rid of them. It’s a shame because if they are not donated to research or other people then they are usually just thrown away after the customer stops paying for the storage…which is really expensive. There used to be a research facility in NY that had donors of eggs and sperm and they would create their own embryos for research, but that is not allowed in the U.S anymore because it’s creating people only for death. The genetic screening is debatable. I chose not to have one with this pregnan
