Why are Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) not in the 2009 MUTCD?
The Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon (RRFB) is not in the 2009 MUTCD because it was granted Interim Approval status too late to include in the January 2008 Notice of Proposed Amendments (NPA). RRFB will have to go through the formal rulemaking process via a future NPA, public review and comment, and then a final rule for a future MUTCD. However, until that occurs, the RRFB can continue to be used under the provisions of Interim Approval #IA-11 dated July 16, 2008. No “testing” or data collection is required for such use.
