Why are rats commonly used in animal experiments?

I can not think of any other reason for rats to be on this earth, except for animal experiments. They also multiply like crazy.

I was under the impression they used mice for experiments, because their reproductive cycle is a lot quicker then rats. But I could be wrong. But they are a close match to us bipeds genetically as stated above.
