Why are portable hard drives so cheap?

hi henna basically because the hardware that makes up a external hard drive is so cheap at the moment, and the manufactuers like the nice guys they are pass on their good fortune to us pc users for example a 80gb sat or ide internal drive can be bought from most online retailers for less than £20 and the external drive caddy/enclosure can be purchased for around £12 so taking into the consideration the trade price and amount of units the big manufactuers buy this equates to around £10 per external drive then add on manufacturing costs and vat and this works out pretty cheap i never buy pre-built external hard drives now as i build them myself, you can save a few quid and it takes around 5 minute to put the drive together good luck henna !
