Why are plastic dishes not recommended as pet food/water bowls?
I have often wondered this too. Although allergies to plastic have been documented in humans, there have been no studies that I am aware of to prove that this exists in animals. However, I have had many patients for whom dermatitis around the mouth resolved when the food and water bowls were changed from plastic to stainless steel. It has been theorized that ‘crud’ (to use the proper medical term) buildup on dirty food bowls is what causes contact irritation dermatitis and that crud builds up faster on plastic than on stainless steel. It may be that daily washing of your pet’s food bowl, whether its plastic or stainless steel, minimizes the chances of contact dermatitis around the mouth.
