Why are people so rude to door to door people?

Regarding door to door people, I will treat them with respect if they treat me with respect. I am rude to them when they disregard my “no thanks” and continue to talk over me, plead with me, and generally disrespect what I have said (this is the same with tele-marketers). I’m also of the theory that if I desperately want to buy something, I’ll go out and get it – I don’t require my front door to be the stage for someone’s sales pitch. However if they’re polite then I’ll let them say their spiel. As for religious do-gooders that come to my door, I have no time for their crap so will gladly tell them to get the hell off my property.
