Why are people so obsessed with Golden Retrievers and Labradors?
Labs and Golden Retrievers are generally considered great ‘all round’ dogs. This, I believe, is to the breeds detriment, for when a breed is popular, you end up with a vast amount of puppy mills and bybs breeding these dogs, producing poor stock with behavioural and health problems. These dogs are often recommended to people because they are good family dogs, very intelligent and easy to train, have no dominance issues (as a general rule), dont have massive energy requirements (although they certainly require walks and obedience training!), grooming requirements, etc. Because they are gun dogs they are bred to be around people and bred to be obedient, easy to train, live closely around humans, plus because they are bred for retrieving game they have ‘soft mouths’ so they generally are gentle with little ones and dont usually bite hard. There are only two breeds that I would recommend to people in any circumstance- and that is the Golden Retriever and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,
