Why are people carrying on about football player salary caps?
in a really simplified answer: each nrl team has a limit (cap) of how much money they can spend each year on player contracts the idea was to even up the competition so that wealthy clubs would not offer huge salaries to all the best players and then get a monopoly on the competition each club was required to submit player contracts to th nrl melbourne had 2 sets of books – one they submitted to the nrl, the other ‘the real one’ was discovered after a tip off in april 10 basically it has meant that melbourne have been able to retain high profile players, slater, inglis, smith, hoffman, finch, etc etc etc, and have a solid depth with a list of players who were well over the salary cap – given their market value thats why melb have made the past 4 grand finals and won 2 of them so it wasnt really about tax – and about cheating to maintain a list of players that would perform well
