WHY ARE PEOPLE ATTRACTED TO CULTS?
Human beings are gregarious by nature and tribal in conditioning. Weare also curious, much of which curiosity comes from fear and much ofwhich comes from a desire to know and understand the world around us.When we hear about something going on in secrecy, we becomecurious and afraid. We are afraid something bad might happen to us orthat we are missing out on something. One of the big draws of cults is, therefore, the charm and mystery ofbeing in an exclusive group, where the ‘action’ is, on the ‘insidetrack.’ Cults ‘cultivate’ this mystery by putting on a good externalfacade of being prosperous, good for their members, and basicallypositive organizations, as though they have some mysterious power thatis available only to those who join. However, most cults do not liveup to their propaganda and image. They use curiosity to attractmembers, but once they have members under control, they incrementallystifle and suppress any further curiosity or individualism.
