Why are overweight children a concern?
Approximately one child out of every five American children is over weight. The number of children who are overweight has doubled over the past three decades. Being overweight may cause physical and psychosocial problems, including increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, and negative self-image. What causes children to become overweight? Family and life-style factors (including nutrition and eating habits) and low amounts of physical activity are the most influential factors and also the most preventable. Genetics may also play a role in obesity, but alone it cannot explain the increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity.
