Why are new HIV prevention methods needed?
About 2.7 million people became infected with HIV in 2007, or 50,000 new infections each week, indicating that current HIV prevention methods are not sufficient. While HIV prevention counseling has been shown to reduce HIV infections, education and counseling are not enough to stop the epidemic, and other prevention methods, such as a safe and effective vaccine, are not likely to be available for many years. The need for new prevention methods is critical, particularly in places where HIV is spreading rapidly such as Africa, Asia and South America.
