Phosphorous is a common soil ingredient in most established lawns. In established lawns Phosphorous is often available in the soil and is not needed. In a study of 50 established lawns in Ontario and Quebec Phosphorous was in plentiful supply in 96% of the lawns. It was actually Potassium (K) that was in short supply. Phosphorous is also associated with run off concerns near water and some municipalities and towns have passed laws minimizing the amount of P that can be put onto lawns. A good healthy lawn will have a strong root and soil ecosystem from which to get the needed Phosphorous. We do recommend that you use a higher Phosphorous fertilizer when starting a new lawn as it is critical to early root development.
