Well, OK, New Mexico and Texas were once part of Nueva Espana, named after the tribe that ruled most of the Iberian Pennisula, which itself was named after a tribe that lived there. Italy was named after a tribe that lived there. So was Britain.And Norway. In America there were American tribes living there. So, Ok, Americans had already named their area before Europeans even got there, the places that have American names were just named after an Angliztion of the name that the people who already lived, that the Europians first encountered, or were the most prominent, or allied themselves with the intruders, called the place. It is way easier than having to come up with a new name. Some states were named from a sucking up, by the colonists, to the ruling English or French monarch of the time.
